We, our community and Nation
1. The concept of regional and federal development
Total Area of Nepal is 1, 47,181 sq.km. it’s 0.33% of total land of the world. A development region is a political division of the country set apart for developmental and administrative purposes. It consists of a few zones. The regions divided on the basis of mountain, climate, temperature, soil, vegetation is called natural or geographical regions. Nepal is divided into 3 regions respectively Himalayan Region, Hilly Region, Terai Region.
Federalism is a dual government system in which a country is divided in to two sets of government system in which a country is divided in to two sets of government, national and autonomous government in provinces. As an alternative to regionalism that did not prove quite successful, federal system has newly been adopted.
Development Region:
1. Eastern Development Region:
Eastern Development Region (Purbanchal in Nepali) is a developed region of Nepal. Dhankutta is the headquarters of this region. The Eastern Development Region consists about 28,456 square kilometer area. There are 3 zones, 16 districts, 893 Village Development Committees (VDCs), one sub-metropolitan and 14 municipalities in the eastern development region of Nepal. The population density in the central development region is the lesser than central development region.
2. Central Development Region:
Central Development Region (Madhyamanchal in Nepali) is best developed region than the other region of Nepal. Kathmandu is the headquarters of this region. The Central Development Region consists about 27,410 square kilometer area. MT. langtang, Ganesh himal and MT. Gaurishankar are highest mountain tops of the central development region. There are 3 zones in central development region of Nepal. There are Bagmati, Narayani and Janakpur zones in central development region of Nepal. The population density in the central development region is the highest among all five development regions.
3. Western Development Region:
Western Development Region (Paschimanchal in Nepali) is best developed region in natural environment than the other region of Nepal. Pokhara is the headquarters of western development region. The Western Development Region consists about 29,398 square kilometer area. There are 3 zones, 16 districts, 864 Village Development Committees (VDCs), one sub-metropolitan and 12 municipalities in the western development region of Nepal.
4. Mid-western development region;
This is the biggest development region in area. Mid-Western Development Region has the terai in the south, the hills in the middle and the mountains in the north. Some of the important mountain peaks are Kanjeroba, Sisne, Patarasi. There are two beautiful lakes- Rara and Foksundo. Rara lies in Mugu and Foksundo in Dolpa district. The climate is extremely dry and cold. River Karnali and Bhari are the two important rivers. Karnali is the longest river of Nepal. There are Rara, Shey-Phoksundo and Bardia National Parks. Swargadwari is a famous religious place of Mid-Western Development Region. Mid-Western Development Region has the least density of population in terms of area.
5. Far western development Region;
The Far-Western Development Region is the smallest development region. The eastern boundary of the Far-Western Development Region is River Karnali and its western boundary is River Mahakali. Far-Western Development Region is influenced by the monsoon wind which is coming from the north west which brings enough rainfall in winter. Thus, Far-Western Development Region gets more rainfall in winter than in summer. Hence, Far-Western Development Region is comparatively less drier than the Far-Western Development Region. During the summer season extremely hot wind called Loo blows from the Thar Desert of India towards the terai of Nepal. Such winds affect Mahendranagar, Dhangadi and even Dipayal in the north.
